  • Quantitative image analysis of the MIB-1 proliferation index in Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
QIA is a useful, reproducible and objective method of determining the MIB-1 PI in NHL; the MIB-1 PI in NHL; however, it needs to be validated in a larger cohort of lymphoma samples before consideration is given to introducing computer based algorithms into routine clinical haematopathology practice.

  • The first reported case of epithelioid haemangioma arising from the pleura
An epithelioid haemangioma (EH) is described as a benign vascular tumour with well-formed but often immature vessels, which is lined by plump epithelioid endothelial cells with amphiphilic or eosinophilic cytoplasm and a large nucleus. Most cases have a prominent inflammatory component. This finding is a rare but important differential for a pleural tumour, as its benign nature may influence management choices for the patient.

  • Ring chromosome 11 with KMT2A (MLL; 11q23) amplification and deletion in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia
The difficulty of effectively treating patients with complex chromosome abnormalities. The identification of additional AML cases with complex karyotypes that have amplification of KMT2A will help determine their impact in the diagnosis and prognosis for these types of patients.

  • Can genetic research motivate parents to pursue genomic testing for children with autism spectrum disorder?
The implications of this study inform existing data on parentalintention about genetic testing for ASD. Our results demonstrate an association between beliefs and motivations surrounding ASD research and testing decision, which at this point have not been assessed outside of qualitative findings. This study also elucidates that these factors related to genetic testing than are currently unconsidered regarding parents of ASD patients.

  • EMMPRIN (CD147) as a potential predictor of oral squamous cell carcinoma progression
the significance of EMMPRIN (CD147) expression in relation to cancer progression thus marking its potential for being an attractive target for immunotherapeutic approaches.

  • Immunohistochemical staining of lipid droplets with adipophilin in paraffin-embedded glioma tissue identifies
we have shown that adipophilin is a valuable marker of lipid droplet status in paraffin embedded glioma tissue and used the method to establish the relationship between the accumulation of cytoplasmic lipid droplets and increased tumour grade in these tumours.

  • Transformation of myelodysplastic syndrome with isolated 5q-syndrome to chronic myelogenous leukemia
This case illustrated the importance of careful patient monitoring to diagnose the nature of this disease and to accordingly modify the course of treatment. Additional cases of MDS with complex BCR/ABL1 translocations are needed to further determine the clinical significance of these findings.

  • Ultrastructural alterations of the inferior alveolar nerve in wistar rats after alendronate administration per os
Our study provides evidence for the first time-to our knowledge- that BP treatment may cause ultrastructural alterations of the inferior alveolar nerve. These changes are characterized by reduction in the thickness of the myelin sheath compared to the control group and by profound vacuolization into the myelin sheath.

  • Detection of t(7;12)(q36;p13) in paediatric leukaemia using dual colour fluorescence in situ hybridisation
The availability of a dual colour FISH assay specific for the t(7;12)(q36;p13) will enable diagnostic laboratories to identify easily and confidently this cryptic chromosomal abnormality. The correct identification of this rearrangement will also help estimating its real incidence in infant leukaemia.

  • Destructive properties of formalin on human otoconia
Formalin is not suitable for preservation of the composite structure of human otoconia because of the dissolution of the calcite component by chemical reaction with water (anisotropic dissolution). A suitable medium for long-term preservation of intact and degenerate otoconia is to be found in pure ethanol.
